Midgeland Riding for the Disabled are in the process of trying to raise £50,000 to buy a Riding Simulator for our group. On Easter Saturday, thanks to the Jockey Club we were invited to the Family Day at Haydock Racecourse. We were kindly lent “Henry” a Riding Simulator owned by The British Equestrian Federation and we set up our area for children to come and have a ride. We were very lucky that one of the Jockeys (Dougie Costello) could spare us 5 minutes of his precious time to not only come and have a go on Henry but he also took the time to go onto Twitter and add our information and ask his followers to support us in our quest to buy a Mechanical Horse for our Riding for the Disabled Group.

We are very aware that people think a Mechanical Horse is a little like a carousel horse on a fairground or maybe a bucking bronco but this cannot be further from the truth. These horses can help build core strength, they can monitor the rider’s position, they can give people their confidence back or give them the confidence to try riding. Riding Simulators are an excellent Physiotherapy tool and can enable a disabled rider who may need two side walkers to experience canter, a pace they would not otherwise have been able to experience. They are sensory and above all don’t, trip, buck, shy and most of all they are great fun. Of course they will never take the place of a real horse but they can be a great stepping stone for riding.

We are very aware that these are financially difficult times for everyone but if we could get sponsorship from Local Businesses it would go a long way to reaching our Goal.
